Characteristics

Not all the ducklings have crests, the ones without being easily seen at hatching time. The crest is due to a fatal gene and normally about 20{cfcd481556a8b43fba6af451761032bd323e94372a0c1e607} of a hatch have a good crest available on any colour or breed.

The crested is usually of a similar size to Orpingtons but almost any breed can exit in Crested form large light or bantam are all presently seen with a few crested calls.The crest is caused by a fatal gene and of a group of ducklings only about half will have the crests with the others carrying the gene that can throw them in future generations. Due to this they are difficult to breed as most of the birds bred are unsuitable and of the resulting crested birds many will have off centre or peculiarly shaped crests.
