History

The breed originated in Rhode Island State where they were named after a local Native American tribe who used to inhabit that area. In size as large as the Norfolk , not kept commercially in Britain but a stock were kept by the British United Turkeys breeding programme some years ago for breed research. Plumage is deep metallic black with each feather ending in a steel grey band edged with black. this gives the effect of a barred bird . Beak black legs salmon to brown. Unusually for a pure breed they are prolific layers with good fertility under a good management system making them popular still with the meat industry for crossing into hybrids. Size similar to the Norfolk.
